Children loving improved playgrounds

CardiffChildren across Cardiff are playing up – but their parents are delighted!

Seven playgrounds across Cardiff have already been refurbished this year with a number of others nearing completion.

A programme of city-wide playground refurbishments begun in the summer of 2007 and since then £1.3m has been allocated to 34 playgrounds and three multi use games areas.

The programme is continuing, with work currently being carried out on four playgrounds and plans to start in the New Year on a further eight playgrounds.

The work involves replacing dated and worn items of equipment, creating improved play facilities across the city.

Play areas are not only being used by children but increasingly, with outdoor gym equipment being added into schemes, by adults of all ages.

Traditional playground equipment such as swings and slides are being complimented by bold challenging items including climbing boulders and multi play units.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive member for Sport, Leisure & Culture, said: “I am delighted to see the improvements that are being made to playgrounds across the city and facilities being created that will take the opportunities for increased physical activity into the new decade.

“Safety and healthy activity are priorities when selecting equipment and the community using the play areas are not short of ides of their own which, where practical, are being incorporated into the new schemes.

“Children demand a challenge, excitement and stimulation and play needs to be broad and demanding. With these challenges in mind the council continues to seek exciting and innovative playground equipment that channels the ever present abundant energy that children have.”
