Chinese feast for Swansea youngsters

Children at Waun Wen Primary School will being getting a taste of Chinese culture as they celebrate the dawn of the Chinese Year of the Rabbit this Friday (February 4).

Pupils and teachers will be dressing in Chinese costume and the school meals team will be laying on an oriental feast of Sweet and Sour Chicken, Chilli Pork, Noodles, Pancake Rolls and Prawn Crackers.

Swansea’s School Meals Mascot Captain Jack will be popping in to join in the fun that involves a day packed with Chinese activities such as paper cutting, calligraphy and Chinese lantern work.

Head Teacher Trui Williams said the school had strong links with China:

She said: “We have a partner school in Chongquing and pupils and staff from our Chinese counterparts have already visited us. They brought with them a beautiful dragon to hang in our school hall.

“Everyone is getting really involved. All the school pupils and staff will be dressing up and and food is central to our celebrations. The number of pupils signing up for a school meal for the day has increased by 25 percent.”

The Chinese Year of the Rabbit starts on Thursday February 3 and the celebrations traditionally last for 15 days.
