Chopra case makes Indian media

Cardiff City say they want to draw a line under the matter and Crystal Palace say there is no matter under which to draw a line, but a measure of the extraordinary global reach of English (with apologies to the Welsh Premier League) football is the reporting of the Chopra case in Indian media.

The Indian Football website has covered the story – Chopra has Indian heritage – and isn’t afraid of having an opinion on, and broadening the issue, saying:

“Was Michael Chopra racially abused due to his Indian (south Asia) background?

“If yes, then action needs to be taken against the concerned player. And such an allegation wouldn’t come about if there wasn’t any truth in it.

“But there is another issue here. English football often shows itself to be multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan, but the lack of Asian footballers in the professional game is an issue which is often forgotten and with such a large south Asian immigrant community more players would be expected to play in the professional game like it is normal on the European continent. Be it African immigrants in France or Belgium, Turkish in Germany; they are part of the game.

“And this needs to be addressed as well.”
