Christmas campaign to fight crime in Abergavenny

Following with the success of their summer campaign to tackle shoplifting and car crime in Abergavenny Town Centre, Gwent Police Officers from Abergavenny Neighbourhood Policing Team are continuing with a month long policing operation to target crime in the build up to the Christmas period.

This operation will specifically target issues that are usually a problem in the lead up to the Christmas period such as shoplifting, burglaries and anti-social behaviour in the evenings on the town centre.

A team of uniform and plain clothes officers will be around the town centre throughout the days and evenings targeting known shoplifting and burglary offenders.  Officers will be patrolling the area and will be giving advice to shoppers on how to keep their belongings safe.

Throughout the evenings, officers will be targeting the pubs in the town to make sure all revellers behave themselves and drink responsibly. Beermats, leaflets and posters will be distributed to all pubs to warn members of the public about the dangers of excessive drinking and its consequences. Officers will be targeting any anti-social behaviour such as fighting, swearing or criminal damage and offenders will face a fine, criminal record or worse.

You can also call into the new mobile police station throughout the day on Tuesday 7th December which will be based in the town centre opposite Waterstone’s bookstore. Members of the public can call in and speak to local officers for advice or assistance.

Police Sergeant Tony Patey from Abergavenny who is leading the operation said, “Despite the decrease in shoplifting following the summer campaign, the build up to Christmas is always a busy for us and we wanted to take a pro-active approach to tackling crime.

“Our main aims are to target persistent offenders and to ensure people stay safe over the Christmas period and we want to help everyone have an enjoyable Christmas.”
