Christmas comes early for Beddau Community

The community have had a brilliant early Christmas present in Beddau, near Pontypridd. And the present was £47,895 from the Big Lottery Fund ‘People’s Millions’.

The grant which is for an eco-sensory community ground was awarded after the project received a record breaking number of telephone votes on ITV1 Wales. The project lead was school’s cluster worker Kimberley McKenzie, who got a helping hand from her local neighbourhood officers in raising awareness about the competition.

Thanks to the winning votes, the community of Beddau can look forward to an eco-sensory packed 2011, with plans for a nature & safe water area, reflective zone, organic allotment, and cultivating centre.

PC Joy Nicolls said “We are all so pleased that the project won, and the grounds will become the focal point for the community. It will bring the entire community together, and provide all new ways of learning.”

Joy continues “It’s going to make a big difference to the community, and we cannot wait for the project to get under way in the new year.”

Cluster Worker Kimberley said “This support from the Big Lottery Fund will open the door for inter-generational opportunities, and enable the entire community to work together in developing the grounds at Llwyncrwm.”

Kimberley continues “Our local officers have been a great help, and have made a significant contribution to helping us get a safer, greener, and cleaner outdoor space for the community.”

The project received 8,814 votes, which was not only a record for the Wales region but was amongst the highest of all ITV regions. To find out more about the winning project please visit http://www.peoplesmillions.org.uk/2010-finalists/wales/eco-sensory-community-grounds-project.
