Clamp down on unauthorised charity collections

CardiffCardiff Trading Standards, South Wales Police and the Department for Work and Pensions have carried out a joint operation this week to clamp down on unauthorised charity collections.

Every year genuine charities lose thousands of bags of donated clothes to bogus clothing collections and scams are regularly operating throughout the city.

A collection company stopped yesterday was found to be compliant with Trading Standards and Department for Works and Pensions legislation.  However clothing collection companies are still operating throughout the city when they do not have the necessary collection licence to do so.

Flyers distributed to households on first glance appear to be charitable but it is entirely possible that further investigation will show that the donated items will really be sold on for profit.

Councillor Judith Woodman, Cardiff Council Executive member for Communities, said: “Cardiff residents should be on their guard against bogus collectors attempting to dupe people with the pledge that their used clothes, footwear and other household items will be distributed to people who really need support.

“People are often misled into thinking they are donating to charity which is not the case.  Donating goods and clothing is an excellent way to raise money for a good cause but we advise residents to use established charity shops to make their donations.”

Police Sergeant James O Donnell, Cardiff Community Safety said: “Bogus charity collectors are not only stealing from residents but from the most vulnerable in our communities – the people genuine charities are striving to help.

“Our message is, please keep giving vital help to charities, but ‘Give with Care’ and check your donation is going to those in need. If you are suspicious of any activity in your area, please contact us on 101. Remember if in Doubt Keep Them Out.”

If you receive a flyer or collection bag through the door and wish to query or report the collection, contact Trading Standards on 029 20872059 or call 101.
