Clampdown on Sale of Fireworks

As part of the Community Safety Partnerships “Working with you to Create and Safer Halloween and Bonfire Campaign”, Wrexham Trading Standards Service is mounting an initiative to ensure that fireworks are not sold to under 18 year olds.

Consequently the Trading Standards Service is urging retailers to be particularly vigilant during this period and will be mounting a campaign of underage test purchases over the coming weeks.

Andy Lewis, Chief Housing and Public Protection Officer said:

“It is essential that retailers advise their staff to be vigilant during this period to ensure that no-one under the age of 18 is served with fireworks or any age restricted products. At this time of year in particular, the combination of fireworks and alcohol in young hands could prove a lethal mix,

“Incidents of anti-social behaviour are often linked to the sale and supply of underage products such as alcohol and fireworks. The service will take appropriate action in dealing with anyone who flouts the law.”

Asking to see proof of age is the key to avoiding under age sales, many retailers now operate a Think 21 Policy where anyone appearing to be under the age of 21 is asked to prove their age. Traders requiring further guidance on any aspect of underage sales should contact the Trading Standards Service on 01978 292045 or log onto the website www.wrexham.gov.uk and follow the links to Trading Standards.
