Coastal protection works are set to get underway at Aberavon

The council have appointed Horan Construction Ltd to undertake coastal protection works and are due to start on site on Monday 28th September.

Works include laying new boulders in front of the lower promenade wall, extending the disabled access ramp situated by Remos and the repair works at the west end of the promenade.

The works will take place over a 10 week period and so during this time there is likely to be limited public access to the beach via the promenade. Signs will be put up to advise members of the public on what areas are out of bounds whilst the project is being completed.

There will be almost 4000 tonnes of stone delivered to the beach with the use of heavy vehicles over the coming weeks. A site office has been set up at the Endeavour Close end of the promenade so that the access to the beach is restricted.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Ali Thomas, said, “Aberavon beach is one of our main assets that continues to be a key tourist attraction. The protection works that are being carried out will ensure that the promenade will continue to be used by 100’s of people every day.

“The authority has invested almost £4m over the past decade to improve facilities at the beach as part of its commitment to regenerate the beachfront and promenade.

“All this work has meant Aberavon Beach has once again been acclaimed as being one of the best beaches in the UK. For the second year running the beach has received the coveted European Blue flag award, acknowledging its excellent water quality and facilities for Neath Port Talbot residents and tourists to enjoy.

“This investment has helped rejuvenate the area and boost the local economy for residents and visitors alike. The result is a new improved image for Aberavon that local residents are proud of and is attractive to visitors and investors.”
