College staff Summit Up

Five Coleg Gwent staff took a step away from their desks, and thousands of steps toward mountainous summits when they took on the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge for Ty Hafan.

Alex Anderson, Alison A’Court, Paul Morris and Ian Rowe donned their hiking boots, waterproofs and compasses to climb Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen-y-Fan in under 15 Hours earlier this month.  Phil Jones provided a single handed support crew – driving the team to their locations to make sure they completed the challenge safely and on schedule.

Following a presentation by Ty Hafan at the Caerphilly Business Awards which the group attended, they decided to take up the challenge and put a team together for the charity. “It’s a great cause,” said Alex, Head of Estates Development & Facilities.

“I love walking, and 3 mountains in a day was just too good a challenge to miss!”

Collectively the group clocked up some serious training to get in shape for the event, including circuits, hiking and even completing the Abergavenny 3 Peaks challenge at the end of March.

Starting at the bottom of Snowdon at 4.15am, the group reached the summit by 6.15am to a beautiful clear view, then made their way on to Cadair Idris.

“This is when it really started to hurt, and then hail!” Said Alex. “Team spirit got us over this second peak and then on to our third and final challenge.

“We reached the top of Pen-y-Fan at 6.15pm and finished in high spirits.

“Thanks to Coleg Gwent for financial and logistical support to our team ‘Coleg Gwent Summit Up’.”

The team have raised over £700 so far, and expect to reach their target of £1,200 after collecting all donations.
