Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has commended a service which is supporting military veterans across Wales after visiting the team in Colwyn Bay this week.

Darren met with workers at Change Step Wales to discuss the project and the benefits it is bringing to veterans in need and their families.

Change Step is a peer mentoring and advice service for military veterans and others with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and a range of psychosocial problems who want to make positive changes to their lives.

The service is led by long-established drug and alcohol charity CAIS and is delivered by veterans for veterans. It aims to support those seeking help for problems encountered as a result of military or operational duty and offers peer support, training opportunities and signposting to relevant health and welfare services.

Darren, who is Chair of the Cross Party Group on Armed Forces and Cadets, said:

“It was great to meet the team at Change Step in Colwyn Bay and to hear more about the amazing work they do.

“It is impossible to overstate the massive contribution that those serving in our armed forces make to keeping our nation safe, often at great personal risk, and for this they deserve the very best services and support. Unfortunately though they are not getting this in Wales, with support for veterans severely lacking, particularly for those suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

“As Chair of the Cross Party Group on the Armed Forces in the Assembly, I have long been highlighting the dreadful impact of PTSD on many former service men and women, and their families, in Wales, and calling for more to be done to help them, aswell as highlighting the crucial role that third sector organisations, such as CAIS, can play in providing services for veterans.

“I commend CAIS for all their hard work in setting up this service, which is a great benefit to many veterans and their families across Wales, and will do all I can to ensure they get the support needed to continue and build on this fantastic project.”
