Community Centres reach the final for top award

Two community centres in Neath Port Talbot are in the running for a top national award.

Cwmafan community centre and Baglan community centre have reached the final for the prestigious APSE (National Association for Public Service Excellence) Award 2010.

Despite being up against venues across the UK, Cwmafan has been selected for the final in the Overall Most Improved Performer category and Baglan for the Overall Best Performer category.

The awards are presented annually and the winners will be announced at a ceremony held in December in Blackpool.

The Council’s community development team, who run the communities centre service in Neath Port Talbot, have secured finalist places in these high profile awards for the last five years. They succeeded to score a hat trick of wins in 2005, 2008 and 2009.

Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “After competing with over 90 community venues for such an esteemed national award, to reach the national final is quite an achievement.

“These centres are at the heart of the community groups. They are much loved places where people of all ages can meet, socialise and have fun.

“I’m confident that Neath Port Talbot will come out on top again.”
