Community clean-up in Swansea Valley

Hundreds of old tyres and other dumped waste have been cleared from the Swansea Valley mountainside.

Police and the fire service, local authority waste officers and representatives from Keep Wales Tidy and the Commoners Association teamed up with local residents to remove rubbish from Gwrhyd Mountain near Rhiwfawr.

The community clean up was organised by local Police Community Support Officer Rhys Thomas following concerns raised by residents

PCSO Thomas said: “The amount of waste dumped on Gwrhyd Mountain at Rhiwfawr has been a long-standing concern for the community.

“Local residents joined forces with various agencies to take part in the community clean up which was a big success.

“In total we have removed over 200 dumped tyres and approximately 10 tons of waste from the area which included rubber cabling, builders waste and car parts.

“The area will now be monitored and anyone caught illegally dumping waste in the area will be prosecuted.”
