Community fights back against vandals

The local community in Abergele has been praised after they fought back against the work of vandals.

More than 100 saplings were planted in Pentre Mawr Park, Abergele as part of a local community project last year. However, their hard work was ruined when up to 60 of the saplings were pulled up by vandals in November.

This week, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar joined Friends of Pentre Mawr Park, along with representatives of Conwy County Borough Council and North Wales Police, to plant trees to replace those lost.

Speaking later Darren said:

‘It was awful to see Pentre Mawr Park fall victim to vandalism last year.

‘Not only did the vandals’ disgusting and heartless behaviour spoil the park but it also ruined the hard work of the schoolchildren, volunteers and council workers who laboured to plant them.

‘Today’s tree replanting is a real example of community spirit. I’m sure these new trees will help the park well on its way to Green Flag status.

‘I’m delighted to have been able to help restore the park and I congratulate all those who turned out in such cold weather to help do their bit.’
