The sight of Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Community Safety Wardens pounding the streets in their distinctive uniforms is becoming in an ever-increasing one, as they play a vital role in helping to tackle anti-social behaviour in Caerphilly county borough.
The team of 11 Community Safety Wardens act as the ‘eyes and ears’ of the community, and play a key role in helping to keep our communities safe.
Throughout the year 2009/10, the team of Community Safety Wardens: –
- Made a total of 5748 targeted visits to know ‘hotspot’ locations.
- Made 244 referrals to the DVLA to report non-taxed vehicles.
- Made 496 ‘Items on View’ referrals for vehicles with property left on view.
- Referred 92 individuals onto the ‘four strikes’ anti-social behaviour process.
- Issued a total of 1079 verbal warnings to individuals for low level anti-social behaviour and conduct issues.
- Issued a total of 26 written warnings and 9 Fixed Penalty Notices.
- Confiscated 623 items of alcohol, on dealing with 125 incidents of prohibited use of alcohol.
Cllr Lyn Ackerman, cabinet member for the environment said, “Our team of Community Safety Wardens make a huge difference to our local area. They are consistently at the forefront of helping combat anti-social behaviour and disorder and are an extremely reassuring presence to local residents, particularly our more vulnerable ones. I am full of praise for the excellent work they do.”
The team of Community Safety Wardens also aim to provide a visible presence in the community in order to build public confidence, by providing reassurance to local people, and helping them to feel safe and proud of where they live.
The council’s CCTV team have also been working hard to detect and deter anti-social behaviour, and throughout 2009/10: –
- Dealt with a total of 4548 incidents, 1333 of which were monitored, 931 of which were reported to Gwent Police, 2018 of which were reported to Gwent Police and monitored (with evidence being secured as a result), and 266 of which were reported to StoreNet.
- There were also a total of 104 deployments of the mobile CCTV van to ‘hotspot’ locations across the county borough.
