Thirst Class

The Old Arcade is celebrating after securing a ‘Thirst Class Award’. Judges from Cardiff Council and South Wales Police awarded the ever popular city centre pub with the ‘small premises’ award, in recognition of consistent high standards of safety and security.

The awards – which are categorised by small, medium and large premises – are handed out to well run bars and clubs that demonstrate a responsible attitude to managing their late night premises within the city centre.

Throughout the year city centre premises are monitored for alcohol related crime and disorder incidents. Points are deducted for alcohol related incidents that occur in the premises.

In addition to the category awards, certificates were handed out to a further six deserving premises, which included the Brains owned Wellingtons, Kitty Flynns and Cardiff Cottage.

Councillor Ed Bridges, Chairman of Cardiff’s Licensing Committee said: “The Thirst Class Awards are an excellent initiative aimed at improving the safety of staff and members of the public in city centre venues. The scheme has recognised and rewarded good management of licensed premises in Cardiff City Centre. Congratulations to all the award winners.”

Licensing Sergeant Trevor Jones, based at Cardiff Bay Police Station, said: “The awards are launched as new figures reveal that in the last 12 months, there has been a reduction in assaults and 345 less alcohol related crime and disorder incidents in Cardiff’s licensed premises. For some time, we have been monitoring problematic premises and working with the licensees to address the issues. Now it is time for us to reward the management of the best of the well run licensed premises for their hard work.”
