Conwy Drop-in Centre to help tackle Doorstep Crime

Doorstep crime is under attack in Conwy as the new look Neighbourhood Watch Drop in Centre was launched yesterday (23/02/11).

The only dedicated Neighbourhood Watch Drop in Centre in the UK it will serve as the first point of contact for local residents to bring problems they have encountered with rogue traders, bogus callers.

Encouraging residents to report such problems is part of an on-going campaign to tackle doorstep crime.  Conwy County Borough Council in partnership with North Wales Police and Neighbourhood Watch, has already set up numerous Cold Calling Controlled Zones throughout the area.

The drop-in centre will be open between 10.30am – 2.30pm Monday to Friday and from 10am – 3pm on Saturdays.  The centre will be staffed by volunteers, with Trading Standards and North Wales Police available every fortnight to offer specialist advice and assistance.

Cllr Philip Evans, Cabinet Member for Corporate and Regulatory Services, Conwy County Borough Council said: “It’s often the vulnerable in our communities that are targeted by these criminals.  Trading Standards Officers and Police are often only made aware after a person has handed over large sums of money.  We hope that by encouraging residents to use the drop-in centre to seek advice and report concerns that we can protect more householders from falling victim to doorstep crime.”
