Gwynedd schools battling it out in the swimming gala

Many of Gwynedd’s school pupils had a lot of fun in the water recently in two very exciting swimming galas.

In the Arfon Leisure Centre, Caernarfon, a swimming gala was held for primary schools with less than 85 pupils on Thursday 10 February 2011 and the following day, it was the primary schools with more than 85 pupils’ chance to show their talents in the pool.

Twelve schools took part on the day and there was fierce competition from all the pupils, but Ysgol y Felinheli came out on top in the category for schools with fewer than 85 children, with a final score of 71, with Ysgol Bethel taking the second prize and Ysgol Waunfawr coming in third.

The schools with more than 85 pupils also gave a great show with five schools competing. Ysgol y Gelli, Caernarfon won the gala with a score of 134, with Ysgol Llanrug taking second place and Ysgol Dolbadarn coming in third.

Dyfed Glyn Davies, Gwynedd Council’s Aquatic Development Officer said:

“We had two fantastic days in the swimming gala with many primary school pupils in the Arfon area enjoying competing in the pool and representing their schools. It was nice to see high quality swimming from the children, and more importantly, everybody seemed to have a good time.

“Big congratulations to Ysgol y Felinheli and Ysgol y Gelli for winning, and thanks to every school that competed. I would like to thank all the staff at the Arfon Leisure Centre for their help during the two days.”
