Coroner fights suspicious death reopening case

Gwynedd Council is representing Her Majesty’s Coroner for North West Wales, Mr Dewi Pritchard Jones, in a case brought against him in the High Court by Mrs Audrey Fraser of 1 Maes y Brenin, Colwyn Bay.

Mrs Fraser has submitted an application under the Coroners Act 1988 to reopen the inquest into the death of her mother, Doreen Morris, who died in suspicious circumstances in Holyhead in 1994. An inquest was opened by the Coroner’s predecessor, Emyr Ditton-Jones, but was discontinued in 1995 when the Chester Crown Court acquitted the man charged with murdering Mrs Morris.

The Coroner does not support the application since, amongst other matters, there is no new evidence in existence which would justify reopening an inquest. It is also argued that reopening the inquest in the circumstances of this case would open a dangerous precedent in coroner law.

The hearing to determine the matter will be held this Wednesday, 14 April 2010 in London.
