Could you help keep lifeboats afloat?

Borth RNLI inshore lifeboat station has today launched a recruitment drive to find volunteers to help the RNLI save lives at sea. Borth is keen to recruit new crew members and extra pairs of hands to assist behind the scenes.

Being part of a lifeboat crew is a major commitment, where crew members may have to risk their lives to save people in peril. The commitment isn’t only measured in the time spent involved in rescues, new equipment and boats mean that regular training programmes also account for much of their spare time. To become an inshore lifeboat crew member, volunteers need to be over 17 (with the permission of their parents) or over 18 and under 45 years old.

The station is also looking for several people to fill the Deputy Launching Authority (DLA) roles. DLAs are part of the team that authorises the launch of the station’s D Class inshore lifeboat, determining whether it is safe to launch in the circumstances; considering the risk to the crew against the circumstances of the potential casualties. Candidates would ideally have a maritime background, but full training is provided.

The RNLI provides first class training and equipment, guidance and support.

Ron Davies the Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) for Borth lifeboat station says:

‘We need Volunteers with the RNLI who are willing to be lifeboat crew members. These Volunteers will be fully trained before we ask them to go to sea to help save people who are in danger. We also need Volunteers to fill other roles that do not go to sea. The Deputy Launch Authority (DLA) is an important role which can be extremely rewarding. We are appealing to anyone in the Borth area with some time on their hands to get in touch and spare a few hours to help an extremely worthwhile charity.’

If you would like to find out more about any of these roles either visit the station on Sunday Mornings between 1000 – 1200 or ring the Lifeboat Operations Manager, Ron Davies on 01970 871512.
