Council Invites Applications for Building Grants

Cardiff Council is inviting applications from voluntary sector community organisations in the city who wish to enhance their buildings through its 2012/13 Community Building Grants programme.

In order to apply, groups will need to demonstrate how their particular project will encourage better use of their building by the local community.

Last year, the Sbectrwm Centre in Fairwater received funding to improve their entrance doors to make them more suitable for wheelchair users. Manager, Barry Shiers said: “The Cardiff Council community building grant has been very useful and has had a very positive impact on our building and our users.”

Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council, Councillor Judith Woodman, said: “The work undertaken at the Sbectrwm Centre is a great example of how the Community Building Grants Programme can benefit all sections of the local community. Grants of up to £5,000 are available and I hope other voluntary sector community organisations in the capital take this great opportunity to improve their facilities as well.”

To be eligible for funding, projects must fall under one of the following categories:

  • Enhancement or improvement of the structure of the building
  • Upgrading of fire safety provisions, health and safety/security provisions
  • New kitchens or toilet facilities
  • Improving accessibility into and within the building
  • Upgrading of electrical, drainage and lighting systems
  • Installation of double glazing windows and doors
  • Installation of energy efficiency measures.

The deadline for applications is 29 June 2012 and interested groups should contact the Neighbourhood Regeneration team at County Hall as soon as possible to apply.
