Council Prepares for Winter Storm – Information Issued at 10.15am

denbighshireDenbighshire County Council is carrying out preparations ahead of a storm which is expected to affect the county later this morning.

The Met Office has issued a weather warning of high tide and gale force winds to affect the coastal areas of the county, with the possibility of flooding.

Flood warnings have been issued by Natural Resources Wales through their automated system to properties on the coastal strip, including areas of Rhyl and Prestatyn.

There is some concern about 74 properties on West Parade, Rhyl (between Butterton Road and Sydenham Avenue).  There is also some concern about flooding in an area between the Nova Centre Prestatyn and the Grand Hotel, as well as the Splash Point area of Rhyl.

Arrangements are being made to prepare a rest centre at Rhyl Leisure Centre, with staff on-standby to deal with any issues if a flood occurs.

A team of 30 Denbighshire staff are working along the coast, assisting partners in checking defences.  Rhyl Promenade has been closed to traffic as a precautionary measure and the Council is currently sandbagging junctions of streets leading from the promenade, to try and protect properties and prevent water flowing down them.

A tidal surge is expected at around 11.45 am and this is the critical time. Once the tide has peaked, the high winds will continue into the afternoon but the flooding risk will have subsided.

Denbighshire County Council is advising people to avoid waterfront areas until the storm has passed, as well as monitor weather forecasts online, on radio and television for the latest information.

Updated weather warnings will be issued on the Met Office website: www.metoffice.gov.uk, on Natural Resources Wales’ website: www.naturalresourceswales.gov.uk and on the Denbighshire website: www.denbighshire.gov.uk
