Neath Port Talbot Council’s Physical Activity & Sport Service are pleased to be delivering a fun and educational after school programme called MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it!!).
MEND is a twice-weekly 10 week course to help 7-13 year old children who are above their ideal weight, and their families, become fitter, healthier and happier.
The third programme has come to an end and the results have been fantastic. The families have been given the skills and information to make healthier food choices and the children have participated in fun activities/mini games designed to improve their self confidence, self esteem and their physical fitness.
During the programme, the families have taken to the aisles in a local supermarket completing a ‘Supermarket Sweep’ type challenge, got creative in a kitchen making ‘MEND Friendly Recipes’, becoming food detectives reading ‘fat and sugar’ labels and excelling in sports such as dodge-ball, basketball and tag rugby.
As a reward for graduating the programme John West Foods supported the initiative by providing the families with tickets for the Ospreys V Munster game. The children had a great experience and cheered on the winning team.
Places on the MEND Programme are being offered completely free on a first come, first served basis to eligible families.
Neath Port-Talbot Council Leader, Ali Thomas, said, “The Council is committed to working in partnership with organizations in addressing the levels of inactivity and obesity throughout the county borough.
“MEND will encourage families to become more physically active in their daily lives and emphasise the need to engage in a healthy lifestyle”.
