Council Tax help for Newport pensioners

Are you or your partner aged 65 or over?
Are you liable to pay the full amount of council tax in 2010/11?
Do you receive a pension, and have less than £16,000 in savings or assets?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above then you may be eligible to some assistance with paying your council tax.

Newport City Council has funds from the Welsh Assembly Government to assist some pensioners in paying their council tax.

The first thing that has been done is to make a payment to taxpayers aged 65 or more who get only part of their 2010/11 charges covered by council tax benefit (as at a qualifying date of 1 October 2010). If you are in this situation, you will already have been notified.

The next job is to help pensioner taxpayers aged 65 or more who don’t presently get council tax benefit, but have less than £16,000 in savings or assets (apart from the property in which you live). If you are in this position, please contact Newport City Council and staff will assess if you could get council tax benefit. If you don’t qualify for benefit, you could still get a grant payment to help pay your council tax bill.

For more information phone 01633 656656 and the council will arrange for an advisor to get in touch with you, or e-mail [email protected]

Pensioners who are interested in getting assistance must contact the council by 31 December 2010.
