Cardiff Council is urging people who are having trouble paying their Council Tax to get in touch and seek help.
Each year thousands of people get into trouble with their Council Tax payments but many decide they simply won’t pay instead of finding out what options are available to them.
Two Cardiff residents who refused to pay council tax and business rates were recently given custodial sentences, one of 49 days for non-payment of business rates and the other of 54 days for non-payment of council tax and business rates.
However such action is very much a last resort and Cardiff Council wants to work with people to help with the payment of council tax so that sentences like this can be avoided.
There are many ways that Cardiff Council can help people with their payments and each year thousands of people work successfully with the council to resolve payment problems and come up with appropriate solutions.
Executive member for Finance and Service Delivery, Councillor Mark Stephens, said: “The message is that if you are having problems paying your Council Tax please get in touch. We are committed to working with people to make their council tax as easy to pay as possible.
“It is really important that people who cannot afford to pay receive appropriate support. However, simply not paying and ignoring the problem isn’t an option. With so many people working hard to keep their payments going it’s only right that we take firm action on people who are cheating the system and not contributing to vital council services. Prison is a last resort but these sentences show if people choose not to pay, then action will be taken against them.”
