Council tax scam warning to residents

Bridgend County Borough Council is warning residents of a scam involving hoax council tax calls.

Reports have been received of callers posing as officers from the authority’s council tax department. They tell residents that system errors have resulted in a rebate and the caller then asks for bank account details to process the promised payment – which of course are never received. This may then provide the caller with access to your bank account.

Bridgend County Borough Council Deputy Leader Councillor David Sage said: “This is clearly a scam and we’re urging residents not to provide any bank details to these fraudsters.

“The calls are not being made by our council tax team and unless you can be completely certain of the person making the call then we strongly advise against providing any personal information.”

Residents who may have already given their account details over the phone are advised to contact their banks as soon as possible.

If you believe you’ve received a similar call please report it to Consumer Direct, by calling 08454 040506. This information is immediately sent to the council’s Trading Standards Service.
