Council welcomes BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2010 to Gwynedd

Gwynedd Council has welcomed today’s news that the Faenol Estate near Bangor has been confirmed as the location for the biggest free-ticket music festival to be held in the UK this year.

The news that Radio 1’s flagship Big Weeked – which attracts some of the biggest UK and international music acts – will be staged in Gwynedd on Saturday, 22 May and Sunday, 23 May was announced by Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles as his breakfast show was broadcast live from the Faenol Estate.

Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards said:

“We are delighted to be able to welcome Radio 1 and its listeners to Gwynedd and are confident that the Faenol Estate will be a fitting stage for the Big Weekend.

“Attracting such a high-profile event is a great opportunity for us to showcase what makes Gwynedd such a great place to live and visit.“

The event will hold 20,000 people per day with the majority of the tickets which will be free going to residents of Bangor and the surrounding area.

Councillor Dewi Lewis, who leads on Economy and Community for Gwynedd Council added:

“This is a fantastic announcement for the county and Gwynedd Council is working closely with Radio 1 to make sure that this year’s event is the best ever.

“The fact that the Big Weekend has been added to the diverse range of cultural and sporting events which will be hosted in Gwynedd during 2010 is a big boost for the local economy, and the Council will be working closely with local businesses to make sure that they can maximise the potential benefits of these large events events.”
