Council will help community in wake of fire

Swansea Council says it will be on hand to help Bonymaen Community Centre users in the wake of a fire that’s badly damaged the building.

The Community Centre on Bonymaen Road is closed for the foreseeable future after flames spread through the building on Tuesday evening (May 25).

South Wales Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire Service have been on site to assess the scale of the damage and investigate the cause of the fire.

The cause of the blaze is not believed to be malicious.

Fire crews were alerted to the blaze at 22:19 and had the flames under control by 02:01. The centre was empty at the time of the fire and the building will be cordoned off and made safe.

A play group for over 150 children had been scheduled to use the centre over the coming half-term break along with other classes and regular users.

Officers from Swansea Council’s Community Buildings Team will now work with the community centre’s voluntary management committee to relocate activities to other venues.

The Council says users and classes will be informed where their activities have been relocated to as soon as final decisions are made.

Cllr Alan Robinson, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Regeneration, said: “This is awful news but we’ll do all we can to minimise the disruption to centre users the damage left by the fire will inevitably cause.

“We’ll work closely alongside the centre’s voluntary management committee and will continue to keep people informed.

“There’s a fantastic community spirit in Bonymaen and it’s hugely encouraging to see how many people and groups have already been in touch to offer their support.”
