Councils to join forces for better purchasing power

Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough councils have given the go- ahead for plans to collaborate to deliver an improved procurement service. Both councils agreed proposals for the partnership at their Cabinet meetings this month and it is anticipated that a transition to the new arrangements will take place between April and September 2012.

This new approach to procurement will lead to a more efficient buying service, covering everything from office stationery to multi-million pound contracts.

Steve Thomas CBE, WLGA Chief Executive said:

“The WLGA warmly welcomes this partnership between Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil councils. For some time now, councils in Wales have been working collaboratively to improve services and deliver efficiencies. We expect this new procurement partnership to deliver real benefits to both suppliers and the local council tax payer.”

“The WLGA has recently launched a new web-based Collaboration Compendium, a live tool with information about collaborative projects and joint working across Wales. The compendium can be used to search for other ongoing collaborative projects between Welsh authorities, across all regions of the country and all service areas.”
