The 28th Annual Pembrokeshire CHEVRON Primary School’s Music Festival was held in Haverfordwest at the weekend, with over 400 primary school musicians taking part at Sir Thomas Picton School on Saturday.

Organised by the Pembrokeshire County Council Music Service and sponsored by CHEVRON, individual performers and ensemble groups competed against each other in open competitions in the morning.

In the afternoon the winners performed in concert to a capacity audience, along with area orchestras and bands.

The judges picked percussionist Efan Haynes from Prendergast School as the overall winner.

He won the Open Percussion class with his xylophone performance of Silent Cinema Chase accompanied by John Likeman.

The winner of the Open Brass competition was Ben Richards from Haverfordwest VC School, who played The Big Country on the trumpet accompanied by Chris Mendes

Flautist Amy Taylor from St Teilos School was the winner of the Open Woodwind competition. She performed Adagio and Allegro by Jardanyi accompanied by Stuart Evans.

The winner of the string competition was violinist Thomas Phillips from Prendergast, who was accompanied by Elizabeth Cawood in his performance of Allegro by Rieding.

Tatsuki Dale Thomas of Eglwyswrw was the winner of the piano class. He performed In the Groove by Mike Cornick.

Meanwhile Triawd from Eglwyswrw won the ensemble competition with a medley of Welsh melodies.

“These competitions provide our young musicians with a valuable experience of performing to an appreciative and friendly audience of parents, teachers and friends,” said  Chris Llewellyn, Head of the County Music Service.

“They also benefit from the support and advice given to them by the adjudicators – Edward Burns-ensembles, James Walker – strings, Christopher Lovegrove-piano, Dennis Mahoney-brass, Peter Morgan-percussion and Jaquie Scaife-woodwind.”

He said the numbers of pupils who had participated in this year’s event, together with the high standard of performances, demonstrated the strength of music in the County’s primary schools and why Pembrokeshire continued to be one of the leading musical counties in Wales.
