Jon House, the current Deputy Chief Executive of Bristol City Council, has been appointed as Cardiff Council’s new Chief Executive.
The decision was agreed at a meeting of full Council today at City Hall following a recommendation by Cardiff Council’s Appointments Committee.
Jon, 39, is due to start his new role in September.
He said: “It is a great honour to be appointed as Chief Executive of Cardiff Council and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.
“Cardiff is a wonderful city with an already established global reputation and I will be looking to build on this and work tirelessly to promote the interests of the city and the surrounding region. I want to achieve the best in terms of money and resources for Cardiff and I am looking forward to working with the team to deliver increased value for money.
“My style is one which is very people focused and I will be keen to continue to improve services provided to residents and visitors to the capital, as well as developing the committed officers of Cardiff Council.”
He added: “It is also fitting that I have been appointed on the week of perhaps the biggest game in Cardiff City’s history and I will be keeping my fingers crossed for the Bluebirds on Saturday.”
Jon will be replacing Byron Davies who retired last November after 17 years in the post. Tom Morgan has been carrying out the role as Acting Chief Executive since December.
The Chief Executive role is vital to the Council and includes the statutory responsibility of Head of Paid Service.
With a background working for the police, Jon was Commander for Sheffield before moving to Bristol City Council as Deputy Chief Executive in 2008.
Council Leader Rodney Berman said: “I am delighted that the appointment of Jon House as the new Chief Executive has now been approved by the full council.
“Jon House greatly impressed the appointments committee. He demonstrated himself as a very strong and able candidate. I am very much looking forward to the opportunity of working closely with Jon, getting down to the business of driving the city forward, improving vital services and continuing to play an increasingly important role on the world stage.
“The new Chief Executive will be at the forefront of taking this agenda forward and I have every confidence he will do this with much passion and ability.”
He added: “I would also like to express my sincere thanks to Tom Morgan who has done a fantastic job taking the helm for the last few months, ensuring the smooth running of the Council and providing some much-needed continuity in driving the city forward.”
