County’s Youngsters to Examine Council Budget at Monmouth Event

MonmouthshireMonmouthshire’s young people are to meet on Saturday, 8th February to discuss the council’s budget for the forthcoming year and its relevance for the county’s youth.

The event, which will be held in Monmouth’s Shire Hall from 11am to 2pm, is entitled “Your Future, Your Way” and will be run by E2C – Engage to Change – a forum for 11 to 25 year olds supported by Monmouthshire’s youth service.  To take part in “Your Future, Your Way” young people should contact their local youth centre.

E2C are hoping young people will engage with the budget process as the event focuses on three areas – school transport, leisure and recreation and education.  Council Leader, Cllr Peter Fox, cabinet member for Schools and Learning, Cllr Liz Hacket Pain and Monmouthshire’s Chief Executive, Paul Matthews will also attend and are keen to hear young people’s opinions.

Councillor Fox said:

“The effect of council expenditure concerns all elements of society so we’re eager to relate to young people and listen to what they have to say about the budget”.

The meeting takes place while the county council invites Monmouthshire’s seven to eighteen year olds to run the council for a day. The Run MCC for a Day competition opened on Monday, 20th January and contestants must complete the following statement – “If I was in charge of MCC I would…”- in a maximum of 100 words and send their entries to [email protected], with the email subject heading “Run MCC for a Day”.  The closing date is Friday, 28th February.

Councillor Fox added: “The Run MCC for a Day competition is a fantastic way for young people with an interest in their local community to learn more about the practical workings of democracy and the challenges its elected ambassadors face.”
