Crime prevention advice for people in Caernarfon

Police in Caernarfon are urging the public to be extra vigilant in the run up to Christmas.

Sergeant Steve Williams said that they wanted people to be on their guard especially at this time of the year.

He said: “We want members of the public to follow some basic crime prevention guidelines and make sure that their property and valuables are secure and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.

“At this time of the year in particular items such as mobile phones, laptops, gifts, cash, credit/debit cards, are prime targets for thieves and every precaution should be taken to look after your things.”

Sgt Williams urged the public to follow some basic guidelines:-

Vehicles

  • Ensure the car is locked and secure.
  • Any valuable items should be stored in the boot or out of sight.
  • Don’t leave items in the car for long periods of time or overnight and if possible remove and place inside their homes.

Residential property

  • When you leave your property secure your windows and doors.
  • Never leave a spare key in a convenient “hiding place”.
  • Consider security lighting.
  • Many burglaries take place when homes are empty so ask a neighbour/friend or family member to check on the property while you are away and ask them to collect your mail.
  • If possible post code your property and/or take photographs of valuable items.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

  • Ensure that you are in possession of your wallet/purse and don’t leave them lying around.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and who is nearby.
  • When at a cashpoint, don’t allow others to see you entering your PIN, if possible cover the keypad while entering your number.
  • Take the money and place immediately inside your wallet, purse, pocket.
  • If you have laptops or mobile phones and you do place them down, ensure that you can see them.
  • DO NOT LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED OR OUT OF SIGHT.

BOGUS CALLERS/ROGUE TRADERS
They will usually request payment in cash for a service at your doorstep and usually turn up unannounced with the intention of tricking their way into your home. They can be convincing and persuasive. Never allow strangers into your home.

If you have any concerns regarding any bogus callers/rogue traders as mentioned, please contact the police on 101 or 0845 607 1001/1002 or Gwynedd trading standards 01286 672255 or Consumer direct Wales on 08454 040506. CRIMESTOPPPERS 0800 555 111
