Plaid education spokesperson calls on Lib Dems to keep their word

The Mid and West AM, who will be standing in the Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire constituency at next May’s election, said that after making such personal promises to students, anything other than voting against a rise in tuition fees will be a disgraceful betrayal of public trust.

Nerys Evans AM said:

“Lib Dem MPs made very personal pledges to students across Wales. Many people voted for Lib Dem candidates locally based specifically on that promise and they will feel deeply betrayed and disillusioned if the find out they have been misled.

The Welsh government sent out a very clear statement last week when we decided to stand up for students. Welsh domicile students will not have to pay the addition tuition fees because we know that higher education is something that should be based on an ability to learn and not an ability to pay.

I am sure that students everywhere will be closely watching the Lib Dem MPs, especially those here in Wales, to see how they vote. A failure to keep their word will leave many people to ask what is the point of ever voting Lib Dem again?”
