Crosskeys students make a splash

A group of Independent Living Skills (ILS) students literally took like ducks to water when they competed in a regional swimming gala last week.

The fourteen students from Crosskeys Campus took home 9 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze medals at the International Pool in Cardiff where they competed against youngsters from 12 other organisations involved in the Welsh Sports Association for People with Learning Disabilities (WSAPLD) in the south Wales region.

The students have been practising every week in the lead up to the event perfecting their breast stroke, backstroke and freestyle techniques.

Lecturer Rebecca Williams is really proud of the students’ performance:  “The Swimming Gala is one of the highlights of my job.  It’s wonderful to think that some of our students, who would not have attained any sporting accolade previously, had the chance to represent their college.  I am very proud of the students and the Gala gives them a real sense of achievement.”
