Crucial Crew date for Ceredigion RNLI lifeguards

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards from Ceredigion were happy to pass on beach safety tips to schoolchildren attending a Crucial Crew event at the Urdd Centre in Llangrannog, Ceredigion, recently.

Local lifeguards Cass Brown, Sion Jones and Gruff Lewis spent a few days attending the event (21 to 23 June) to pass on the RNLI’s vital beach safety messages in Welsh to children from various schools in Wales who were at the Urdd Centre.

Using material such as Welsh posters, display boards and leaflets, Cass, Sion and Gruff spoke to more than 300 schoolchildren over the three days.

Other agencies, such as police and fire service, were also at the Crucial Crew gathering to deliver their safety messages.

Ceredigion area Lifeguard Supervisor Elin Jones said: ‘Getting our beach safety message across to this age group of children is a “crucial” part of our work, and it also shows the RNLI’s commitment to the Welsh language that it puts in the resources to achieve this task.

‘We need Welsh speaking lifeguards in West Wales and who knows maybe a few of the children who have heard the message these past few days will turn out to be RNLI lifeguards in future.

‘What is especially important is that the children take in what they have heard and enjoy a safe stay on Welsh beaches this summer and for years to come.’
