A Briton Ferry school has won a prestigious gold award for its work to promote pupil inclusion.
Cwrt Sart Comprehensive School has been rewarded for its spectacular achievement in a new Welsh Assembly initiative ‘Inclusive Schools Award for Wales’ (ISAW).
Cwrt Sart is the only school in Wales to secure a gold award, given to schools and other learning centres in recognition of their inclusive cultures, policies and practices.
Achieving a gold award means that a school has transformed its provision for pupils and is at the leading edge of educational practice.
Headteacher Huw Lloyd, said, “This award follows on from our excellent inspection last year.
“There are many groundbreaking initiatives at the school which are giving all pupils the chance to excel whatever their starting point.
“A new Study Support Centre works with vulnerable children developing their self esteem and learning ability.
“Meta” groups of identified able children link with world class departments at Cardiff University through a new partnership aimed at raising aspirations, and the whole community is also increasingly involved in the life of the school through a range of family learning projects.”
Leader of Council, Ali Thomas, added, “Inclusion is important. It ensures that educational provision is tailored to the needs of individuals, minimising the risk of young people leaving school without taking advantage of all a school has to offer.”
Huw Lloyd added, “Inclusion is at the heart of everything that we seek to do at Cwrt Sart.
“It’s important that all young people attending this school are given the opportunity to benefit from the wide range of provision that we have on offer.
“This is also further recognition of the way staff at the school are prepared to do things differently for the benefit of all pupils.
“Inclusive practices foster a feeling of belonging and mean that more pupils are engaged in learning and succeeding.”
