Cycling and walking boost for waterfront

Better facilities than ever are now available for cyclists and pedestrians along Swansea’s River Tawe waterside.

Work on an upgrade scheme to enhance the links between the Tawe river bridge and Swansea Yacht Club in the city’s maritime quarter are now complete.

Surfaces have been improved and new trees, seating, bins, railings and public lighting columns have been introduced under the scheme.

The project was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Regional Development Fund and Swansea Council. It forms part of the Swansea City Centre Strategic Framework- a policy that will guide the regeneration of Swansea and develop better links between the city centre and waterfront.

Disruption was kept to a minimum throughout the works and access to Sainsbury and the Sailbridge from Quay Parade is now once again available.

Cllr Chris Holley, Swansea Council Leader, said: “We’re fortunate in Swansea to have a magnificent waterfront and this scheme has helped further boost the environment for visitors to the area.

“The upgrade looks fantastic and means better and more visually pleasing links between SA1 and the maritime quarter are now available. It’s part of a much wider regeneration programme and further enhancements will be delivered in future to improve Swansea’s offer and future economic potential.

“I’d like to thank people for their patience during the works.”

Jocelyn Davies AM, The Welsh Assembly Government’s Deputy Minister for Housing and Regeneration, said: “Regeneration is all about making the most of what an area has to offer.

“The River Tawe is one of Swansea’s most attractive natural assets so I’m delighted that this project has enhanced this environment for visitors and residents to enjoy as well as improving the cycle network.

“It’s also improved the links between the City Centre and its waterfront and has made it easier for people to access.

“I’m delighted that, as well as delivering the scheme, the investment created a number of weeks of targeted training for individuals to help them prepare to move back into employment.”
