Over 50 dance groups from different clubs, schools and the local community joined together recently to celebrate Dance at Blackwood Miners’ Institute.
Solo dancers and groups from all over Caerphilly county borough joined together for the Community Dance Showcase over 3 evenings. The festival is an annual event, celebrating all genres of dance and is open to all ages and abilities to take part.
The event was a result of partnership work between local dance group Ty Dawns Coed Duon, Blackwood Miners’ Institute and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Arts Development Team.
Lauren Campbell, from Ty Dawns Coed Duon and the lead coordinator of the showcase, said, “It has been a fantastic year this year to see so many groups from the borough bring so many different styles of dance to our festival. Many people young and old have come together through dance and have met and inspired others around them. This is a fantastic annual event each year for our community to come together.”
The Community Showcase was the second Dance Event hosted by the Blackwood Miners’ Institute in two weeks. Sport Caerphilly held their annual Caerphilly School Sport Association “Got to Dance” Finals in the theatre a week before, where 30 acts showcased a number of different genres including contemporary, jive and disco.
Ty Dawns Coed Duon hold classes out of Blackwood Miners’ Institute and will be bringing new contemporary dance classes to the ‘Stute from September. The sessions will be suitable for ages 4 to 7 and ages 8 to 11. There will also be a new “only boys allowed” group and a class for children with Special Educational Needs.
