David Hughes Leisure Centre is leading the way in developing football

An Anglesey leisure centre is providing a growing trend in the football world.

Futsal is a new way to play great football indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón, which can be translated as “hall football. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.

David Hughes Leisure centre was granted £1000 by the Community Chest fund to purchase goals, balls, bibs and other equipments towards the new scheme. Co-coordinator Barry Edwards a 5 x 60 officer at the neighboring secondary school said ‘ this is a excellent opportunity for everyone, we are very grateful for the grant and we can now introduce the community to this new sports that’s hitting the football world’ . Working alongside Gus Williams the FAW Development Officer for Anglesey, is ensuring that football opportunities across the islands community continues to grow strength by strength.

He added ‘’It’s great to see so many children enjoying this form of Football which has done well for the Brazilians over the years and may well be the key for the success of Llandegfan and Llangoed players here at Menai Bridge School. Possibly I shall be invited to be on the UEFA panel of Futsal very soon and heart warming to be able to go there and inform them that the game is taking a hold in Anglesey. With players of such ability and Council Sport Officers managing such a great programme with assistance of the Community Chest funding long may the Futsal be a success. ‘
