Davies: Carwyn Jones’ ‘mañana government’

Carwyn Jones is leading a ‘mañana government’ where lethargic Labour Ministers are drifting through their five year term and delaying major decisions, Welsh Conservatives claimed today.

A series of major economic strategies have had their publication dates put back, while key decisions on next generation broadband and Enterprise Zones have been delayed or kicked into the long grass.

The Welsh Government’s Innovation Strategy, City Regions Strategy and three year Economic Sector Panels strategies have all missed their publication dates by months and are still pending.

In September 2011, the Business Minister pledged that a preferred bidder would be chosen for next generation broadband.  This was then delayed to March 2012, further delayed to Spring 2012 and now not expected until Summer 2012.

Andrew RT Davies AM, Leader of the Welsh Conservatives in the National Assembly, said, “Wales is facing extremely challenging economic times, when all government efforts should be focused on stimulating growth in our economy.

“It is surprising that Labour Ministers should be taking such a carefree attitude towards growing our economy.

“As Wales remains the poorest part of the UK, the overriding priority for Labour Ministers should be implementing measures and incentives to bolster business growth.

“Enterprise Zones are getting up and running in England, yet Welsh Ministers have yet to put some meat on the bones of their policy by announcing how the Welsh zones will operate and attract new businesses.

“Some key decisions, which have a direct impact on small businesses, have been delayed twice or even three times.

“The First Minister needs to get a grip on his lethargic government and get ministers and their departments to start meeting important deadlines.

“The last thing we want is for prospective employers and investors to see Wales as being behind the curve and decide to take their job creation plans elsewhere.

“Welsh Ministers need to shake off their mañana attitude to government and get on with their jobs.”
