Davies: Wales must have comprehensive diabetes service provision

Welsh Conservatives will today call on the Assembly Government to ensure comprehensive measures are in place to tackle the diabetes in Wales.

Speaking ahead of the party’s Opposition debate in the National Assembly, Shadow Health Minister Andrew RT Davies said:

“Unfortunately, there has been an increase in rates of diabetes in Wales and clearly with this comes consequential public health challenges.

“We are calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to conduct a review of Local Health Board provision of diabetes services to ensure that care and treatment services across Wales are comprehensive, irrespective of where a patient lives.

“We are urging the Welsh Assembly Government to implement a SCI-DC type system, to help ensure that the National Service Framework for diabetes in Wales is effectively delivered.

“We are also using our debate to recognise the role of Welsh research establishments in developing research into people living with diabetes.

“Diabetes accounts for around 10 per cent of Welsh NHS costs and we must ensure that these resources are being used as effectively as possible and beneficially for all diabetes patients in Wales.”
