A world-wide drive to reduce emissions by 10% in 2010 is gathering steam in Monmouthshire with a day of action on Sunday, 10th October. The 10:10 Campaign originated in the UK but soon became a global phenomenon and brings together individuals, organisations and businesses to take very simple steps to reduce emissions by 10%.
Monmouthshire Local Service Board (LSB) partners, Anuerin Bevan Health Board, Monmouthshire County Council, Gwent Police, Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations, town and community councils and the Countryside Council of Wales joined the 10:10 campaign to help reduce 10% emissions from buildings and offices.
Held on the tenth day of the tenth month of 2010 the focal point will be known as the 10:10:10 day of action and in Monmouthshire, Local Service Board partners Gwent Police will be celebrating the day by launching a staff awareness campaign reminding staff that easy measures, like turning down heating and closing windows will help reduce consumption.
Gwent Police staff contributed to a cut in emissions during the Ryder Cup when four officers jettisoned their vehicles for mountain bikes. They rode 1,400 miles during the course of a week, saving a huge amount of car fuel. And the 10:10 campaign is not only restricted to high profile events. The police have encouraged car sharing by providing special parking spaces and fitting new cavity wall with roof insulation at stations in Abergavenny and Magor to help reach a target of cutting carbon emissions by 10 per cent. Some of this work has been funded by the Carbon Trust.
Chair of the LSB sustainability sub-group, Peter Fox said: “Monmouthshire LSB partners are working hard to achieve a 10% reduction in emissions and are pleased that our partners, Gwent Police are celebrating 10:10:10 day of action by launching a staff awareness campaign.”
