Daytime community opportunities for older people in Bridgend County Borough

Socially isolated older people in Bridgend County Borough are set to benefit after proposals to alter the catchment areas for local day care services were approved by Cabinet.

In future, the Vernon Hart Centre in Maesteg will cater for people from the Llynfi Valley, Sarn, Tondu, Aberkenfig, Cefn Cribwr, Kenfig Hill and Pyle areas, while the Minerva Street Day Centre in Bridgend will provide services for the Bridgend, Porthcawl, Pencoed, Ogmore and Garw Valley parts of the county borough.

At the same time, three ‘community cafes’ where older people and carers can socialise and receive appropriate advice have been established in Porthcawl, Pyle and Ogmore Vale to support the work of the day care centres. A specialist café catering for people with dementia has also been set up in Bridgend town centre.

A ‘local champion’ project is also encouraging members of the community to play an active volunteering role and help identify people who they think may benefit from the service.
