False alarm for Criccieth RNLI Inshore Rescue Boat

Volunteer crew members from Criccieth RNLI Lifeboat Station were paged at 6pm on Monday (10 October) to recover two people cut off by an incoming tide near Porthmadog.

HM coastguard requested the launch of the Criccieth Inshore Rescue Boat, Margret a Nantw, following a 999 phone call by a member of the public. Reports were given of two people trying to navigate flooding channels near The Cob, Porthmadog.

The Criccieth IRB was towed by road to Porthmadog and launched from the harbour, less than 20 minutes after the launch request. Despite the quick response, as the boat arrived on scene both persons had successfully waded to dry land, assisted by members of HM Coastguard.

Following the incident Peter Williams, Criccieth Lifeboat Operations Manager stated:

‘This incident demonstrates how quickly we are able to respond to emergencies across our area and the value of the Inshore Rescue Boat in such instances. Although this will be recorded as a false alarm with good intent, it illustrates the importance of checking tide times before walking in tidal areas.’
