Seven primary schools in Neath Port Talbot are joining in the celebrations for Dragons Sports’ 10th anniversary.
First launched in 2001, the sports programme was designed to encourage children to take part in sport so that they can lead active lifestyles which, in turn, means better health.
The celebrations highlight to pupils the importance of being involved with the sports programme and how their support and enthusiasm for extra curricular sport has made the programme such a success.
Funded by the Lottery, there are 8 specific sports to inspire young people – athletics, golf, cricket, tennis, hockey, netball, rugby and football.
Joining pupils for the birthday party games is mascot ‘Draig’
Mynachlog Nedd primary was the first school to kick off the celebrations.
Deputy headteacher, Gavin Fitchett, said, “The day went really well and pupils really enjoyed the celebrations. There was plenty of adult support and the fact that it was organised so that staff could enjoy watching the pupils in action made the day more memorable.
Council Leader, Ali Thomas, added, “Health is such an important issue so I am pleased to see the success of this Dragon Sports’ programme.
“Inspiring young people to take up physical exercise will mean better health in later life and they can have fun at the same time.”
Other schools in Neath Port Talbot joining in the Festival of Sport celebrations are Brynhyfryd, Clun, Alderman Davies, Tonnau, Waunceirch and YGG Castell Nedd.
