Demonstrating Community Arts

A festival of community arts in Cardiff will take place in the city next month.

DEMO is a free showcase event that brings together many of Cardiff’s leading community arts organisations for a day of colour and activity at St David’s Hall on Saturday October 2, 10am to 5pm.

A programme of workshops, displays and performances will be held to promote the valuable work artists do with local communities. There’ll be something of interest for everyone including special workshops for young people.

Families are welcome to come along and take part in the workshops including singing, hand drumming and percussion organised by Community Music Wales, a recycled jewellery workshop by the Makers Guild in Wales and MCing, graffiti art and drama workshops by Cardiff Council’s Youth Service.

South Wales Intercultural Community Arts (SWICA) will perform an extract from the highly regarded “Dragon” carnival-theatre show while Promo Cymru and The Sprout website will be hosting a ‘chill-out’ cinema featuring short films produced by community organisations around Cardiff.

Other organisations taking part in the fun-packed festival are NoFitState Circus, Black Voluntary Sector Network Wales and the Wales Millennium Centre.

Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “DEMO is going to be a fantastic showcase of community arts. There’s some excellent work going on across the city for people of all ages and this is a chance for people to come along, view the displays and take part in the various workshops on the day.”
