Denbigh prepares for next phase of flood risk management scheme

Work on Phase 3 of the £5million Denbigh Flood Relief Management Scheme will begin this Autumn, which will see large sections of work in the Lon Llewelyn, Smithfield Road and Lenten Pool areas of the town in a bid to protect homes and businesses from the threat of flooding for future generations.

In order to keep residents up to date with the scheme, there will be an exhibition at Denbigh Library for two weeks from 8 August, complete with a high tech computer simulation of a flood event in Denbigh and information boards. The exhibition will be manned at various times throughout the two weeks.

Inevitably, during the works, there will be disruption for motorists and pedestrians but engineers from Martin Wrights Associates, working with Denbighshire County Council, are looking at an innovative design to help keep disruption to a minimum in the town centre.

In preparation for this next stage, they are looking at using tunnelling techniques to insert the 1.2metre wide culvert underneath Lenten Pool in the centre of the town to avoid having to dig up large sections of road and pavement.

Cabinet Lead member for Environment, Councillor Sharon Frobisher, said: “The people of Denbigh were extremely patient during the summer when work was carried out on the gas mains in the town and we hope they will continue to be patient while the Flood Risk Management works are carried out this Autumn.

“We can assure everyone that we will be doing whatever we can to minimise the disruption during these essential works which will protect homes and businesses from the threat of flooding in the future.”

An important part of the scheme is to involve and inform the local community as much as possible and talks have been given to schools, local business groups and the Town Council. A website giving up to date information on the scheme has been set up and can be viewed at www.denbighflood.co.uk or www.llifogydddinbych.co.uk

Also new to this scheme is the use of popular social networking sites, members of the public can follow developments on  twitter@DFRMS and a link to facebook is on the scheme website. There is also a text alert system set up which can be subscribed to by texting “Denbigh” to 60066.
