Denbighshire’s Trading Standards fish sales warning

Denbighshire’s Trading Standards team is urging consumers to be on their guard against cold callers offering to sell packs of fresh fish.

The Council has received complaints from residents in the Llangollen area concerning  traders offering to sell unlabelled pre – packed fresh fish door to door.

Gary Sumner, Denbighshire’s Trading Standards Manager, said: “These traders make an initial call offering to sell fish which is not frozen and often unlabelled.  If the trader is refused, the same individual or another will call a short time later with what they describe as “the fish you ordered”.

“This person will be extremely persistent and in some cases aggressive in pressurising the consumer to pay for the fish, which they did not agree to buy.

“Not only is the fish unlabelled, it may not have been stored correctly and may be dangerous to health if eaten.

“Criminal offences may have been committed by using aggressive and misleading selling practices and by failing to sell the fish correctly labelled.

“Our advice is never agree to buy goods on your doorstep unless you know the trader is reputable.  If in doubt do not open the door and do not let them pressure you into opening the door”.

If any residents have been affected by these traders or have any information about the traders involved please contact Denbighshire Trading Standards Section at Russell House, Rhyl, on  01824 -706057.
