Millar: Response to hospital overcrowding concerns

Responding to figures obtained by BBC Wales – showing ‘some Welsh hospitals have become routinely overcrowded, with high bed occupancy rates’ – Shadow Minister for Health Darren Millar AM said:

“These statistics provide us with further evidence that the NHS here in Wales is at breaking point.

“Waiting lists are up, operations are being cancelled and ambulance response times aren’t good enough.

“When it comes to the health of the nation you cannot compromise on clinical safety or it can literally become matters of life and death.

“The Welsh Labour Government must now set clear bed occupancy targets in line with the advice from the Royal Colleges and take immediate action to reverse its planned £1bn NHS cuts to the health service in Wales.

“Spending must be prioritised to resolve these capacity problems as soon as possible.”
