Denbighshire and partners celebrate new affordable housing project

The footings have gone down for a new affordable housing development at Pentredwr, near Llangollen, after years of work to bring the scheme to fruition.

The development, which has been co-funded by the Welsh Assembly, Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd and Denbighshire County Council is for three, energy efficient, three bedroom houses and when finished later this year, will be specifically for young families with local connections.

This is a Llantysilio Community Council led project and was the first of its kind in Denbighshire. The original idea was to encourage young families into the area to save the local school which was at that time under threat of closure.

Through a series of public meetings and the completion of a Housing Needs Survey, it was established there was a local need and then began the process of gaining planning permission. This was especially lengthy because the site is outside development boundaries but was granted as part of Denbighshire’s Local Connections housing policy.

The project was made possible with help from the landowner, Denbighshire and Conwy’s Rural Housing Enabler, Denbighshire County Council, Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd and the Community Council.

Cabinet Lead Member with responsibility for housing, Councillor David Thomas, praised the work of everyone involved with the project.

“This new scheme has come about through collaboration and joint working with a number of organisations and will provide three energy efficient homes with low running costs for families with local connections to the Pentredwr area.”

Landowner, Mr Pickett, said: “It is four years since we answered the request for land for affordable houses. There have been many times when we thought it would never happen, so are delighted to see the scheme underway. This is a great opportunity to ensure the survival of the village of Pentredwr.”

Local member, Rhys Hughes, said he was delighted to see the project reach this stage.

“We have waited a long time to get this development off the ground and I’m delighted to see the first footings are now down.

“These houses will ensure we can keep young families with local connections in the area for generations to come.”

Mrs Sandra Baker, Clerk to Llantysilio Community Council said – ‘Llantysilio Council is very proud of its achievement in being the first Community Council in Denbighshire to lead such a project’.

Bryn Davies, Development Manager at Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd praised the work of Denbighshire’s planning department and housing strategy team in working together to help bring the scheme to fruition.
